Lake Shawnee winter trout stocking set for Feb. 22; lake closed to fishing Feb. 22 until Feb. 29
TOPEKA, KAN. – The winter stocking of trout at Lake Shawnee is set for noon on Saturday, Feb. 22. 7,000 pounds of rainbow trout at trout will be released at the main boat ramp. Following the stocking, the lake will be closed until 6 a.m. Feb. 29 to allow the fish time to disperse and acclimate to their new surroundings.
The stocking is done in partnership with the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism as part of the Communities Fisheries Assistance Program. Trout season runs through April 15. During this time, fisherman must have a $14.50 trout permit.
“We are proud to continue this partnership with KDWPT to enhance the fishing experience for the residents and visitors of Shawnee County,” said John Boyd, Shawnee County Parks + Recreation planning and development director.
CFAP funds offset the cost of fishing programs at Lake Shawnee including the stocking of the lake with trout in the spring and fall of each year. All KDWPT licensing and permit requirements apply to fishing at Lake Shawnee and Ward-Martin Creek.
Shawnee County Parks + Recreation includes nearly 60 miles of trails, 2,625 acres of parks and 320 annual days of sporting activities. In addition, the department offers recreation programs, educational programs and golf. A combination of tax dollars, user fees and private donations enables Shawnee County Parks and Recreation to offer parks, sporting and aquatic facilities with state-of-the art features, and beautiful, nationally recognized gardens.
