TOPEKA, KAN. – The fall stocking of trout at Lake Shawnee is set for Monday,

Oct. 25. 7,000 pounds of rainbow trout at trout will be released into the lake. Following the stocking, the lake will be closed to fishing until 6 a.m. Oct. 31 to allow the fish time to disperse and acclimate to their new surroundings. The trout stocking will take place at 3:30 p.m. The public is invited to watch.

The stocking is done in partnership with the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks as part of the Communities Fisheries Assistance Program. Trout season runs through April 15. During this time, fisherman must have a $14.50 trout permit. Trout permits may be purchased at most locations where fishing licenses are sold. More information on trout fishing in Kansas can be found at https://ksoutdoors.com/Fishing/Special-Fishing-Programs-for-You/Trout-Fishing-Program.

The trout come from Crystal Lakes Fisheries in Ava., Mo.

“We are pleased to continue this partnership with KDWP to provide this additional fishing experience for residents of Shawnee County and visitors to Lake Shawnee,” said Jeremy Myers, park operations director.

CFAP funds offset the cost of fishing programs at Lake Shawnee including the stocking of the lake with trout in the spring and fall of each year. All KDWP licensing and permit requirements apply to fishing at Lake Shawnee.

The trout stocking program began in 1979 when KDWP Secretary Mike Hayden approached Parks and Recreation Director Ted Ensley about stocking the lake.
