Public Engagement Meeting set on preservation of Lake Shawnee bathhouse building

A public engagement meeting is set for 5:30 p.m. Feb. 5 at the Lake Shawnee Event Center to gather input on a proposal to preserve the historic bathhouse building at Lake Shawnee and suggest possible future uses for the building.

Process of turning bare gardens into Tulip Time starts now

Volunteers and Shawnee County Parks + Recreation horticulture staff are putting in more than 1,000 hours of work reading garden beds and planting 100,000 tulip bulbs that will welcome spring 2018 with Tulip Time.

Shawnee County Parks + Recreation receives grant for Deer Creek Trail Extension

Shawnee County Parks + Recreation has received a grant to extend the Deer Creek Trail from NE 10th Street to Dornwood Park. The extension is the first phase of connecting the trail system to SE 29th where it can connect to the Lake Shawnee Trail.

Lake Shawnee fall trout stocking set for Oct. 28

Lake Shawnee will be stocked with 7,000 pounds of trout at noon Oct. 28. The lake will be closed to fishing until 6 a.m. Nov. 4 to give the fish time to acclimate and disperse into the lake.

Youth Sports -- Teaching Sportsmanship and Skills

"Fun, no matter what" is how Derrick Mead describes Shawnee County Parks + Recreation's Youth Sports program. SCP+R's youth sports manager says that coaches "teach lessons they would want their own children to know."
