Overview
The Master Plan for the Lake Shawnee Trail was completed in 2001. The Master Plan called for a primary loop developed around the entire park, that would be a minimum of ten feet wide concrete and twelve feet in higher use areas. Smaller and shorter secondary loops or spurs would be constructed from alternative materials and would take advantage of the unique park assets. The Lake Shawnee Trail is designed to connect to the proposed Deer Creek Trail and will include the development of the proposed regional trailhead and parking facility. This project is included in the Topeka-Shawnee County Regional Trails and Greenways Plan and the Topeka-Shawnee County Long Range Transportation Plan.

Connecting Amenities
Additionally, the Lake Shawnee Trail connects the many park amenities together. High usage areas include:
  • ADA Fishing Dock
  • Four Comfort Stations / Restrooms
  • Garden House
  • Gazebos #1 and #2
  • Heated Fishing Dock
  • Lake Shawnee Arboretum
  • Lake Shawnee Girls Softball Association
  • Lake Shawnee Marina
  • Lake Shawnee Tennis Center
  • Shelter Houses
  • Ted Ensley Gardens and Pergola
  • Two modular ADA accessible playground systems
  • Windsurf Beach
  • Yacht Club

In 2009, construction was completed on the remaining section that connected the seven plus mile loop around Lake Shawnee. This section, from Tinman Circle to 45th Street, connected the Lake Shawnee Golf Course, Campground, Shelter Houses #4, #5, #6, and Reynolds Lodge. This section also features a bridge and connections to the neighborhoods adjacent to Lake Shawnee.
